Body Composition Calculation

Maximizing Accuracy Without Hardware

Background

All forms of body composition analysis are methods of estimation, as they do not directly or comprehensively sample tissue. Instead, body composition analysis involves taking measurements to populate formulas that generate approximations of lean mass, body fat, body water and other values.

Accuracy Benchmarks

Since certain methods such as hydrostatic weighing, air displacement plethysmography and DEXA (dual energy x-ray absorptiometry) are considered gold standards for taking measurements that support body composition estimation, bodQR bases its calculations on available research-validated formulas that are known to have the highest correlation with results from these gold standard tools.

Leveraging Scientific Literature

Clinical research studies in an academic setting commonly require the estimation of body composition without access to body analysis hardware -- much like the constraint faced by many fitness and nutrition businesses. As such, there has been an effort over decades to use statistical analysis for the development and continuous improvement of quantitative methods that estimate body composition. This provides a robust source of validated formulas that have been evaluated against gold standard estimation methods, applied to varied populations and shown to have a high degree of accuracy.

Example

As an illustration, the formula used by bodQR for body fat estimation is derived from a university research study of over 6500 people and produces results with a .89 correlation with air displacement-based results across all ranges of body fat, gender and age -- which is superior to results from tools such as calipers for skinfold measurement. This means that roughly 90% of members using bodQR will get the same result as with air displacement (while 10% will see a small difference), making bodQR extremely accurate -- as well as cost- and time-efficient.
